FIFA World Cup 2014 :Brazil vs Chile

28th June 201422:00
World Cup
*Round of 16 ( Match 49 )
Stadium: Estádio Mineirão, Belo Horizonte
Brazil will play Chile on Saturday as the World Cup 2014 Round of 16 gets underway. The hosts will be favorites to win their way through to the quarterfinals, however, Chile will pose a serious challenge and if the Brazilians are not at the peak of their game, there could be an upset here today. The game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m. ET and can be watched on TV on the ABC network or online through free live stream (details below).
Side: The Brazilians finally came to life against hapless Cameroon in the final group stage match. The Seleção got multiple goals from Neymar in the opening half and then opened up the match with second half goals from Fred and Fernando Luiz Roza. However, the Brazilian back line was not exactly perfect as they allowed a goal to Cameroon when a one-on-one battle was lost on the wing and then the two center backs fell asleep on a simple cross. Brazil made a much more concerted effort in the match to get their attacking players forward. In the games with Croatia and Mexico there was a little bit of apprehension in going fully forward, but against Cameroon it all went away and the beautiful Brazil was back. Against Chile, they will likely go into the match expecting to press forward just as they did against Cameroon, but will quickly realize the Chilean midfield is killer when the ball is turned over. It will likely force Brazil to be slightly less adventurous and they may rely more on quick combination play rather than the flood of attackers that produced four goals against the Indomitable Lions. Defensively Thiago Silva and David Luiz have to be in tune with each other. Chile loves to play the ball from the wings into the center which is demanding on central defenders. Finally, they must keep their eyes on Alexis Sanchez at all times. When the Dutch slowed Sanchez the Chilean attack looked much less threatening, but it’s definitely easier said than done.

Chile have been an impressive side thus far but ran into a brick wall in their final group game against the Netherlands. La Roja had been enjoying the first two matches of the tournament pressing midfielders and then finding heaps of space in front of opposing defenses. The Dutch allowed none of it. Holland opted to sit back and let Chile come at them rather than forcing possession and allowing Chile to try and turn them over. The Chileans looked lost and were almost begging Alexis Sanchez or Eduardo Vargas to break down the Dutch defense. Brazil is not a team that is known to sit back and let teams attack them, but neither is Holland and their blueprint may be awfully tempting to follow. Chile must be much more creative in the final third using combination passing and better crosses to put the pressure on the central defense of Brazil. The good news for Chile is the midfield will not be nearly as clogged up in this match as it was in the one with the Netherlands. Brazil play an open style of game and it could play right into the hands of Chile. The biggest concern is will the Chilean back three, all of which are not natural center backs, keep the ridiculously talented Brazilians at bay. They could change formation, but it’s not usually in the DNA of South American teams to give in to an opponent. They must get better help from their midfielders and simply cannot give the ball away sloppily in the center of the field. Chile is certainly good enough to win the match, but Brazil may have just hit their stride. Add in the fact that the match will be played in Brazil and it might be too tall a task for one of the most fun teams remaining in the tournament.

Nigeria vs Argentina- World Cup 2014: live

today, 10:00 PM • Group F
Estádio Beira-Rio, Porto Alegre

Argentina have already booked their spot in the last 16 after winning their opening two matches and only require a draw to win the group, which would most likely mean they avoid France and instead face the Group E runners-up in Sao Paulo next Tuesday.
Alejandro Sabella’s side will be looking for more than a point, though, having failed to shine in either of their games so far and been made to work for a 2-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina and 1-0 success against Iran.
On both occasions they have been thankful to moments of magic from Lionel Messi, who followed up his stunning goal against Bosnia with the last-minute winner to see off Iran.
“All players who played today have contributed to this victory but of course we have a genius who is called Messi. Fortunately he is Argentine,” said Sabella after the Iran match.
“Everybody would have liked to have Messi but it is us who have him.”
Argentina will hope to underline their credentials as potential champions with an improved display against Nigeria, and Sabella will have to decide whether to make changes.
He has no new injury worries and may be tempted to give a few players a rest, but is more likely to give the likes of Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria another chance to find form and go in with a similar starting XI.
Nigeria are also expected to be unchanged following a 1-0 victory against Bosnia, which has put them on the brink of a place in the knockout stages.
Victor Moses and Godfrey Oboabona have had injuries and are unlikely to be considered by manager Stephen Keshi for places in the starting team.
Nigeria have four points from their first two matches and even if they lose in Porto Alegre they will still progress to the next round if Iran fail to beat Bosnia.
Peter Odemwingie netted the winner against Bosnia and is relishing the prospect of taking on a side like Argentina.
He told FIFA’s official website: “I earned myself a starting position and it was important to work hard to keep it, especially before a big game like Argentina, which is a dream for every player to play in.”

Spain vs Holland>>> World Cup 2014: - as it happened

                                                                GROUP - B
                                               Spain >>>1             5<<<Netherlands
Scoring summary
Spain
   Xabi Alonso 27 Pen

Holland
    Robin van Persie 44,
    Arjen Robben 53,
    Stefan De Vrij 64,
    Robin van Persie 72,
    Arjen Robben 80

GOAL! Spain 1-0 Holland (Alonso pen, 27 min)

Xabi Alonso wasn't going to miss this. He steps up and hammers a perfect penalty low into the bottom-right corner with his right foot. Cillessen guessed correctly but he was never going to reach that - it was struck too firmly. Now Holland really will be rueing that Sneijder chance.

WHAT A GOAL!!!! Spain 1-1 Holland (Van Persie, 44 min)

What a cracking moment of improvisation from Robin van Persie! He's been so quiet, he's barely had a touch but he only needs a second to make a difference. It all started with Daley Blind on the left flank. He raked a gorgeous diagonal pass from left to right, the ball looping over Sergio Ramos and through to Van Persie. Suddenly thoughts were turning back to 1998, Frank de Boer and Dennis Bergkamp. Van Persie could have brought it down. Instead he spotted Casillas half-a-yard too far forward and he embarrassed the Spain goalkeeper by lobbing him with a wonderful diving header from 15 yards that dropped perfectly into the net! Superb. Casillas could only watch helplessly.

Half-time emails

"The penalty decision was woeful," says Geoff James. "Yet again officials are determining the outcome of games. Why not automatically do instant replay for penalty decisions?"

"That was a good goal and congratulations RVP, but that run over to celebrate with Van Gaal really did demonstrate how slow he is these days," says Marie Meyer.

"That was a magnificent execution of a header - incredible," says Fraser Thomas.

"Glad you took another look," says David Marriott. "The refereeing is rubbish, probably deliberately favouring the marquee teams. England don’t stand a chance. Mind you they probably didn’t anyway."

"Let me be the first: Van Persie - The Flying Dutchman!" says Victor Lacken.

GOAL! Spain 1-2 Holland (Robben, 52 min)

Arjen Robben has his 2010 redemption and the world champions are behind! Once again, it's Blind with the assist. What a player this guy might be. He was found by Sneijder on the left and he clipped a fine pass into the centre for Robben, who was in acres of space, Pique and Ramos both having taken a leave of absence. Robben plucked the ball out of the sky - that's great control - and then smuggled it past a soft challenge from Pique, who was hurtling back desperately to try to salvage the situation. Robben missed when he was through in 2010, but not this time - Casillas was given no chance with a belting finish from Robben's left foot!

GOAL! Spain 1-3 Holland (De Vrij, 64 min)

A free-kick to Holland on the left flank. Wesley Sneijder trots over to take it and swings a high cross towards the far post, tempting Iker Casillas off his line. He's challenged by Van Persie, forcefully, and that's enough to send the cross over him and past his flap and on to the head of the unwitting De Vrij, all of two yards out! He somehow heads against the post but he's so close to goal that the rebound hits him on the shin and trickles over the line! De Vrij, who gave away the penalty, isn't feeling so sore now. But Spain are. They're furious. They want a free-kick for a foul on Casillas. They're not getting one! Casillas is booked for his protests.

HUMILIATION!!!!! Spain 1-4 Holland (Van Persie, 72 min)

Iker Casillas had a nightmare in the Champions League final and he's had a nightmare here! A harmless backpass was rolled back to him. He had loads of time. Or that's what he thought. Casillas took an abysmal first touch, the ball spinning a few yards away from him, and Van Persie was on him in a flash, nicking it away and then poking into the empty net before the covering defender could get back in time! Spain have fallen to pieces! Even Holland can't believe what's happened!

GOAL!!!!!!!!!! Spain 1-5 Holland (Robben, 80 min)

It's total, utter, unanswerable humiliation for Spain! Have you ever seen anything like this? Holland were defending. Then they were attacking. A long ball was sprayed up the right and there was Robben speeding away from a wheezing Sergio Ramos, who never had a hope of catching him. Robben's touch looked like it had got away from him, Casillas racing off his line, but he simply completed an 180 degrees spin - what skill! - to dribble away from the goalkeeper, who was scrabbling after him on the deck like a man trying to clamber out of a ditch, before hammering the ball past the two Spain defenders on the line! Oh my. Oh wow. Spain are a shambles. Is this Total Football?
